{"id":50,"date":"2020-12-22T06:35:17","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T06:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asianmusicology.org\/?page_id=50"},"modified":"2026-02-28T07:24:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T07:24:21","slug":"policies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/asianmusicology.org\/?page_id=50","title":{"rendered":"Ethics Policies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Use of Generative AI<\/strong> <strong>(GenAI Policy)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Authors may use generative AI tools for language editing\u00a0(grammar, clarity) with human oversight, and remain fully responsible for accuracy, originality, and integrity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI tools must not be listed as authors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If AI tools are used beyond minor language polishing (e.g., drafting sections, translation, analysis, figure generation), authors must include an AI Use Statement\u00a0that describes the tool and its purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviewers\/editors must not upload confidential manuscripts into third-party AI tools unless confidentiality and permissions are ensured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General\u00a0Duties\u00a0and\u00a0Responsibilities\u00a0of\u00a0Editors\u00a0of <em><strong><em>Asian Musicology<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p>Editors of <em>Asian Musicology<\/em> are&nbsp;responsible&nbsp;for&nbsp;everything&nbsp;published&nbsp;in their&nbsp;journals.&nbsp;They&nbsp;should:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>strive to meet the needs of readers and authors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>constantly improve the journal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensure the quality of the material they publish;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>champion freedom of expression;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintain the integrity of the academic record;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preclude business needs from compromising intellectual standards;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relations with <\/strong><strong>R<\/strong><strong>eaders<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Readers should be informed about who has funded the research and the role of the funders in the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relations with <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>uthors<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors take all reasonable steps to ensure the quality of the material they publish, recognizing that journals and sections within journals will have different aims and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors&#8217; decisions to accept or reject a paper for publication are based only on the paper\u2019s importance, originality, and clarity, and the study\u2019s relevance to the remit of the journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A description of the peer review processes is published, and Editors are ready to justify any important deviation from the described processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Journal has a declared mechanism for authors to appeal against editorial decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors have published guidance to authors on everything that is expected of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors are not to reverse decisions to accept submissions unless serious problems are identified with the submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Editors will not overturn decisions to publish submissions made by the previous Editor unless serious problems are identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relations with <\/strong><strong>R<\/strong><strong>eviewers<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors have systems to ensure that peer reviewers\u2019 identities are protected<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The peer-review <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>roces<\/strong>s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journal has systems to ensure that material submitted to the journal remains confidential while under review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Complaints<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors should respond promptly to complaints and should ensure there is a way for dissatisfied complainants to take complaints further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Encouraging <\/strong><strong>D<\/strong><strong>ebate<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cogent criticisms of published work should be published unless Editors have convincing reasons why they cannot be. Authors of the criticized material should be allowed to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies that challenge previous work published in the journal should be given an especially sympathetic hearing. Studies reporting negative results should not be excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Encouraging <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>cademic <\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><strong>ntegrity<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors should ensure that the research material they publish conforms to internationally accepted ethical guidelines. Editors should seek assurances that all research has been approved by an appropriate body (e.g. research ethics committee, institutional review board). However, Editors should recognize that such approval does not guarantee that the research is ethical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pursuing <\/strong><strong>M<\/strong><strong>isconduct<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors have a duty to act if they suspect misconduct. This duty extends to both published and unpublished papers. Editors should not simply reject papers that raise concerns about possible misconduct. They are ethically obliged to pursue alleged cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors should first seek a response from those accused. If they are not satisfied with the response, they should ask the relevant employers or some appropriate body (perhaps a regulatory body) to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editors should make all reasonable efforts to ensure that a proper investigation is conducted; if this does not happen, Editors should make all reasonable attempts to persist in obtaining a resolution to the problem. This is an onerous but important duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ensuring the <\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><strong>ntegrity of the <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>cademic <\/strong><strong>R<\/strong><strong>ecord<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, after an appropriate investigation, an item proves to be fraudulent, it should be retracted. The retraction should be clearly identifiable to readers and indexing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relations with <\/strong><strong>J<\/strong><strong>ournal <\/strong><strong>O<\/strong><strong>wners and <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>ublishers<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship of Editors to publishers and owners is often complex, but should in each case be based firmly on the principle of editorial independence.
